I got the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Y0UB3K?ie=UTF8&tag=lamprotv-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002Y0UB3K" rel="nofollow">Sony KDS-50A2000 KDS50A2000 Bare Lamp XL5200</a> for my Sony when the screen showed the bulb life was almost gone. There must be a timer that lets you know when "The end is near" after about 4 years of usage.

Bulb replacement took about 5 minutes. First, I let the set cooldown for a little more than an hour. The purchased bulb was inside a housing. After removing the old bulb and housing, it seemed there was no way to take the old bulb from its housing.

For the DIYer, I recommend getting a housing with your bulb, the first time. It's too much hassle messing with them when you want to get the set working again.
